Spray Foam vs Fiberglass: Compare the Complete Assembly
Fiberglass can provide economical cavity insulation but needs a separate, continuous air-control layer. Spray foam can combine air control and insulation in accessible assemblies, but it adds chemical-process, inspection, removal, and vapor-profile considerations.

Choose spray foam when its air-control and geometry advantages solve a real assembly problem and the risk controls are feasible. Choose fiberglass when the air barrier can be detailed separately and cost, reversibility, low chemical volume, or future access carries more weight.

Where fiberglass wins
Regular open framing with a well-detailed sheathing or interior air barrier is a strong fiberglass use case. Deep attic floors also favor economical fibrous insulation after penetrations and the ceiling plane are air sealed. Repairability matters where future wiring, plumbing, roof, or pest inspection is likely.
Poor fiberglass performance is usually a detailing problem: gaps, compression, misalignment, missing air control, or wind washing. Those defects are not reasons to assume the material category cannot work.
Where spray foam wins
Spray foam can simplify air sealing across irregular open framing and transitions where a continuous layer is hard to construct from sheet goods and sealants. Some closed-cell formulations provide a higher reported R-value at a comparable thickness, which may help in depth-constrained assemblies.
Those advantages only count if the foam adheres, cures, reaches the specified thickness, connects continuously, and fits the vapor and fire strategy.
Hybrid is a design, not a compromise
Flash-and-batt assemblies use a foam layer with fibrous insulation, but the minimum foam thickness, climate, surface temperature, vapor profile, and interface must be designed. A thin random coat plus a batt is not automatically condensation-safe.
A practical choice for a regular wall
If the exterior air and water layers can be detailed continuously and the cavities are accessible, a well-fitted fibrous system deserves a complete quote. If those transitions are complex, compare the work needed to make each option continuous.
