Spray Foam vs Cellulose: Air Sealing, Depth, Drying, and Retrofit

Cellulose can fill deep attic floors and dense-pack suitable cavities economically, while spray foam can create air and thermal control in one installed layer. Their strongest applications often differ rather than compete directly.

The short answer

For a conventional vented attic, detailed air sealing plus deep blown cellulose is often a practical path. Spray foam becomes more relevant at complex transitions, depth-constrained areas, or a designed roofline conversion, where its added risks and cost solve a defined problem.

  • The insulation belongs at an attic floor, roofline, or enclosed wall
  • A separate air-sealing phase is possible
  • Cavity depth and settling or density control are documented

Attic floors

ENERGY STAR advises air sealing before adding attic insulation and describes loose fill as a practical option. This separates two jobs: seal the ceiling plane at penetrations and transitions, then build economical thermal depth with cellulose.

Foam can still have a targeted role at suitable gaps and difficult transitions. Covering the entire attic floor with spray foam should have a clear reason beyond “foam is better.”

Rooflines

Cellulose can participate in designed vented or dense-pack roof assemblies, but rooflines have moisture and ventilation constraints. Spray foam can make an unvented roofline practical in certain assemblies. Neither path should be improvised from material preference alone.

Existing walls

Dense-pack cellulose is installed to a specified density to limit settlement and airflow within the cavity; it still depends on the wall’s air and water-control layers. Closed-cavity foam systems have different expansion and inspection risks. Open the wall or use a qualified retrofit assessment when moisture, wiring, blocking, or exterior drainage is uncertain.

Compare installed scope, not a bag and a kit

Ask both proposals to include the same boundary, air-sealing work, target insulation level, access treatment, and cleanup. For loose fill, specify how installed depth and coverage will be checked; for foam, specify thickness and process verification.
